From Queen Founding to Feeding, Growth and Diapause

Lasius niger, commonly known as the black garden ant, is native to the UK and one of the most beginner-friendly ant species to keep.

This guide takes you from a newly caught or purchased queen through founding, first workers, feeding, housing, colony growth and winter diapause.

They’re a hardy and forgiving species, but successful founding still comes down largely to patience, stable conditions and minimal disturbance rather than constantly trying to intervene.

The one rule that matters most

Do not move a newly caught queen into a nest.

During founding, the test tube is effectively her nest. It provides the small, enclosed and humid chamber she needs while raising her first generation of workers.

Once the first workers arrive, you can give the colony access to a small feeding area or outworld while continuing to use the test tube as the nesting chamber.

When you first get your queen

Whether you’ve caught a queen yourself or received one in a starter colony, the first priority is giving her somewhere stable to settle.

If she’s already in a properly prepared test tube:

  1. Check that the queen appears physically okay.
  2. Keep the tube horizontal and avoid shaking or tipping it.
  3. Make sure there is still water behind the reservoir cotton.
  4. Place the tube somewhere stable at normal indoor temperature.
  5. Keep the nesting end covered.
  6. Leave her to settle.

If your queen has arrived through the post, transport can leave her unusually still or restless. Give the tube time to reach room temperature before repeatedly checking her.

Do you need to feed a founding Lasius niger queen?

A Lasius niger queen is fully claustral.

That means she can raise her first generation of workers, known as nanitics, using reserves stored within her own body. During natural founding she does not need to leave the founding chamber to forage.

Feeding during founding can sometimes provide additional resources, but opening a queen’s tube also introduces handling, disturbance and the possibility of spills, mould or other problems.

For a first-time keeper, the safer default is simple:

Leave a healthy founding queen sealed and unfed until her first workers arrive.

Once workers emerge, feeding becomes an important part of colony care.

Setting up a Lasius niger queen

Where should you keep her?

Choose somewhere:

  • Stable and level
  • Out of direct sunlight
  • Away from radiators and heat vents
  • Away from speakers, washing machines and regular vibration
  • Out of reach of children and pets
  • Somewhere you won’t feel tempted to move or check her every day

A quiet shelf, drawer or cupboard can work well as long as it doesn’t overheat and still has normal airflow.

The queen doesn’t need absolute darkness every second of the day, but keeping the nesting end of the tube covered reduces unnecessary disturbance.

A little light during an occasional check isn’t a problem.

Lasius niger temperature

A stable normal room temperature is suitable for Lasius niger.

Roughly 20–24°C works well during the active season.

Brood development tends to be slower at cooler temperatures and faster under warmer conditions, but don’t make rapid growth the goal.

Avoid trying to speed up founding with aggressive heating.

In particular, avoid:

  • Sitting the test tube directly on a heat mat
  • Heating the water reservoir
  • Leaving the tube in direct sunlight
  • Rapid temperature swings
  • Keeping the queen in an enclosed cabinet that becomes overly warm

Normal UK room temperature is enough.

A colony growing slowly isn’t automatically an unhealthy colony.

How often should you check a founding queen?

During founding, checking roughly once every 7–14 days is plenty.

A check should be simple:

  1. Lift or slide back the cover.
  2. Look for the queen and any eggs, larvae or cocoons.
  3. Confirm that water remains in the reservoir.
  4. Cover the tube again.

You don’t need to rotate the tube, shine a bright light directly at the queen or attempt to count every egg.

Checking more often won’t speed up development.

What normal founding looks like

Founding queens can behave very differently from one another.

Normal behaviour can include:

  • Sitting still for long periods
  • Frequent grooming
  • Producing a small cluster of white eggs
  • Carrying brood when disturbed
  • Eggs appearing to disappear and then turning up elsewhere
  • Slow development during cooler weather
  • Keeping one or both wings

Wing removal is common after mating, but it isn’t proof that a queen is fertile.

Likewise, a queen keeping her wings doesn’t automatically mean she’s unmated.

There’s no way to guarantee that every caught queen has successfully mated, will lay eggs or will successfully found a colony.

Sometimes patience is the only thing you can provide.

Lasius niger brood development

There are four obvious stages you’ll see during colony development:

Egg → larva → cocoon/pupa → adult worker

Temperature has a significant effect on development speed, so avoid relying on fixed timelines you see online.

One queen might produce workers quickly while another kept under apparently similar conditions takes considerably longer.

The first workers are usually noticeably smaller than later generations.

These first workers are called nanitics.

What are nanitics?

Nanitics are the first generation of workers produced by a founding queen.

They are normally smaller than future workers because the queen has raised them using the limited reserves available to her during founding.

Their arrival is a major turning point.

The queen is no longer responsible for raising the colony entirely from her own stored resources. Workers can now forage, bring food back to the queen and brood, maintain the nest and begin supporting future generations.

When the first workers arrive

A newly emerged worker often looks pale and soft.

Don’t immediately open the tube the second you notice one.

Give the worker roughly a day to darken and begin moving normally.

Once one or more workers are active, the colony can begin using a small feeding area.

Giving the colony a feeding area

Once workers become active, they need a safe way to forage without you repeatedly opening the test tube.

A small outworld or feeding area allows you to provide sugar and protein while leaving the humid test tube largely undisturbed as the nest.

The important word here is small.

A colony with one or two workers doesn’t need a huge outworld or full-sized formicarium simply because workers have appeared.

Providing more space than the colony can manage can make feeding, cleaning and monitoring unnecessarily difficult.

You don’t need to use everything immediately.

During solo founding, the queen remains sealed in her test tube.

Once the first workers have emerged, darkened and begun moving normally, the Founding Pod becomes the colony’s feeding area.

The test tube remains their nest.

Connecting the Founding Pod

The Founding Pod is not a nest.

It’s a compact feeding area where workers can:

  • Take sugar water
  • Take insect protein
  • Dump waste
  • Explore and forage in a controlled space

The test tube remains the dark, humid nesting chamber.

Do not tip the queen and workers out of the tube into the Founding Pod.

To connect it:

  1. Set the Founding Pod on a level surface.
  2. Have the test-tube connector ready.
  3. Keep the occupied test tube horizontal.
  4. Remove only the cotton stopper from the entrance end.
  5. Push the tube gently but firmly onto the connector.
  6. Check that there are no gaps around the connection.
  7. Keep the nesting end of the tube covered.
  8. Let the ants explore in their own time.

Never remove the cotton separating the ants from the water reservoir.

Workers might not immediately rush into the Founding Pod.

That’s completely normal.

A tiny colony has very little reason to spend long periods outside the nest. They’ll begin exploring when they need food.

Feeding Lasius niger workers

Once workers are active, the colony needs two main nutritional resources.

Carbohydrates provide energy for the workers.

Protein supports brood development and the queen’s continued egg production.

Sugar water

Sugar solutions work well as a carbohydrate source.

Offer a very small droplet on a feeding tray or another safe feeding surface.

If you’re using the Antastic Tom Starter Set, the supplied needle-tip bottle allows you to dispense a controlled amount onto the tray.

Avoid:

  • Putting the needle inside the occupied test tube
  • Feeding directly beside the brood
  • Filling the tray with liquid
  • Creating a droplet large enough to trap a worker
  • Pointing the bottle towards the ants while squeezing

A small colony takes surprisingly little.

Start with a tiny droplet and see how quickly it’s consumed.

Refresh it once it’s taken, dried out or become contaminated with debris.

Bigger droplets don’t provide any real benefit and simply increase the risk of drowning and mess.

Protein

Once workers are present, start with a very small amount of insect protein roughly once a week.

Suitable options include:

  • Fruit flies
  • Cricket
  • Mealworm
  • Cockroach

For a colony with only a few workers, a whole large feeder insect is far more food than they need.

Offer a small piece and cut larger insects open so workers can access the softer tissue inside.

Frozen-and-thawed feeders are useful because they remove the risk of live prey fighting back inside a confined setup.

Place protein in the feeding area rather than deep inside the test tube.

Check it the following day and remove uneaten remains before they begin to spoil.

How often should Lasius niger be fed?

For a young colony, a reasonable starting point is:

  • A tiny sugar-water droplet every few days
  • A small amount of insect protein around once a week

Then adjust according to what the colony actually consumes.

A colony with lots of growing larvae will usually have a higher protein demand than a queen with mainly eggs.

Ant jelly or protein jelly shouldn’t be relied upon as a complete replacement for real insect protein.

Treat it as a supplement at most.

Keeping the feeding area clean

Use a removable feeding tray wherever possible.

That allows old food to be removed without disturbing the nest itself.

When cleaning:

  • Work slowly
  • Avoid knocking the test tube
  • Make sure connections remain secure
  • Remove dead feeder remains
  • Remove sticky sugar residue
  • Never spray cleaning products around the ants
  • Use plain water on removable parts unless stated otherwise

For small colonies, substrate isn’t necessary in the feeding area.

A clear floor makes food spills, waste, mould and the ants themselves much easier to see.

Looking after the test tube

The water reservoir behind the cotton serves two purposes:

  • Drinking water
  • Humidity for the nesting chamber

Check periodically that:

  • Water remains in the reservoir
  • The cotton hasn’t completely dried out
  • The tube hasn’t flooded
  • The reservoir cotton hasn’t collapsed
  • Condensation isn’t becoming excessive

A little staining or ageing around the cotton isn’t automatically an emergency.

Look at the whole situation.

Consider how much water remains, whether there’s visible spreading mould, whether flooding is occurring and how the ants are behaving.

When should you offer a fresh test tube?

A replacement tube may be appropriate if:

  • The reservoir is nearly empty
  • The cotton has dried out
  • The tube has flooded
  • Contamination is spreading
  • Feeding can no longer be carried out safely
  • The colony has genuinely become cramped

Don’t automatically tip or shake the colony into another tube.

Where possible, offer a clean replacement and allow the ants to relocate themselves.

If you’re unsure whether a move is necessary, it’s usually better to ask before forcing one.

When should Lasius niger move into a nest?

The arrival of the first workers doesn’t automatically mean a colony needs a formicarium.

A test tube can remain an excellent nest for quite some time provided it still contains water, remains safe and has enough usable space.

Continue using the test tube while:

  • Water is available
  • The tube remains safe and usable
  • Workers can be fed without difficulty
  • The colony isn’t overcrowded
  • Waste remains manageable

Move into a larger nest once the test tube is genuinely failing or the colony has grown enough to benefit from additional nesting space.

Bigger is not automatically better.

Small colonies placed into oversized nests can begin using unused chambers for waste, become harder to feed and monitor, and may be more difficult to keep at appropriate humidity.

Using an Antastic Tom nest

If you’re using the Antastic Tom system, the Small Nest with Founding Insert is intended as a future upgrade rather than something that needs to be attached as soon as the first worker appears.

When the colony genuinely needs the additional nesting space:

  1. Hydrate the nest carefully using the supplied pipette.
  2. Don’t saturate the nest.
  3. Connect the existing setup securely.
  4. Keep the new nesting area dark.
  5. Allow the ants to investigate in their own time.
  6. Don’t shake or pour the colony into it.

The founding insert reduces the amount of usable nesting space, but that doesn’t automatically make it appropriate for a lone founding queen.

Can you keep multiple Lasius niger queens together?

For beginners, the safest answer is no.

Don’t introduce another Lasius niger queen to an established colony.

Multiple queens can sometimes tolerate one another during the earliest stages of founding, but that doesn’t mean they’ll continue living peacefully once workers arrive.

Aggression between queens can eventually result in injury or death.

Introducing another queen later is even riskier.

If you have two separate queens, keeping them as separate colonies gives both the best chance.

Lasius niger diapause

Lasius niger is a temperate species and undergoes a genuine seasonal slowdown.

As autumn approaches you may notice:

  • Less activity
  • Reduced food intake
  • The queen slowing or stopping egg laying
  • Slower brood development
  • Larvae remaining present without pupating

This doesn’t automatically mean something has gone wrong.

The colony is responding to its normal yearly rhythm.

Research on overwintering Lasius niger found colonies kept at the warmer end of the cool range, around 7–8°C, performed better than colonies kept close to freezing at around 2°C, where worker survival was reduced.

For UK-kept colonies, aim for the warmer side of “cool” rather than treating near-freezing conditions as ideal.

As a general guide:

  • Allow the colony to cool gradually through autumn
  • Aim for roughly 5–10°C
  • Preferably stay closer to 7–10°C than near 0°C
  • A period from roughly November through late February or early March works well
  • Warm the colony gradually afterwards

Don’t move a warm colony immediately into near-fridge temperatures.

Give them time to acclimatise both on the way down and on the way back up.

During diapause

  • Make sure water remains available
  • Keep the test tube secure
  • Check occasionally for water loss or flooding
  • Don’t warm the colony for long inspections
  • Only offer food if workers remain clearly active and are still foraging

Even a young colony that has only recently produced its first workers benefits from a proper winter rest.

Don’t try to force continuous growth through its first winter.

Common Lasius niger questions

My queen hasn’t laid eggs. Is she infertile?

Not necessarily.

Temperature, disturbance, transport and the individual queen’s condition can all affect timing.

Give her stable conditions and time.

Wing loss or appearance alone can’t confirm that a queen is fertile.

She keeps carrying her eggs around. Is something wrong?

Usually not.

Queens frequently pick up and move brood when disturbed.

If she begins carrying them around while you’re checking the colony, that’s often a sign that it’s time to cover her back up and leave her alone.

My queen appears to be eating her eggs. What should I do?

Repeated brood loss can sometimes point towards stress or the queen’s condition, but one missing batch isn’t enough to diagnose a problem.

Reduce disturbance and keep the setup stable.

Should I feed a lone queen because she looks thin?

Don’t routinely feed a healthy lone Lasius niger queen purely because of her appearance.

She’s fully claustral and adapted to raise her first workers without needing to forage.

If her condition genuinely looks abnormal, ask for advice rather than making major changes based on appearance alone.

Should I give my queen an outworld before workers arrive?

For a normal fully claustral Lasius niger queen, there’s usually no need.

Keep her sealed during solo founding.

Once the first workers have darkened and are moving normally, you can provide access to a small feeding area.

If you’re using the Antastic Tom Starter Set, that’s when you attach the Founding Pod.

Can I move the colony into a nest as soon as workers arrive?

There’s usually no reason to.

A colony with only a handful of workers can continue living comfortably in its test tube while using a small feeding area for foraging.

Move them into a nest when they actually need additional nesting space rather than simply because a nest is available.

The workers aren’t leaving the tube to forage. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily.

Very small colonies often spend almost all of their time inside the nest and may only forage briefly.

Provide food in the feeding area and let them find it themselves.

Don’t try to force workers out of the tube.

How quickly should a Lasius niger colony grow?

There’s no fixed timetable.

Temperature, queen condition, season, brood stage and food availability all influence development.

Cooler conditions generally mean slower development.

Focus on stable care rather than comparing your colony directly with somebody else’s online.

Should I heat Lasius niger?

Normal room temperature is enough in most UK homes during the active season.

Gentle ambient warmth can increase development speed, but direct or uncontrolled heating isn’t necessary and can become dangerous.

Never place the water reservoir directly over a heat source.

Can I release my colony later?

Don’t take on a queen assuming you’ll simply release the colony later.

Once ants have been kept in captivity and exposed to captive feeders, equipment and other colonies, release can introduce ecological and disease risks.

Only take on a queen if you’re prepared to care for the colony long term.

When to ask for help

Get advice before making a major change if:

  • The test tube is flooding
  • The water reservoir has run out
  • The queen appears injured
  • Brood repeatedly disappears
  • Mould is spreading rapidly
  • You’re unsure about moving them into another tube
  • You’re considering moving a very small colony into a nest
  • The colony is behaving unusually after diapause

When asking for help, include:

  • A clear photo of the complete setup
  • A closer photo of the queen and brood if possible
  • Approximate room temperature
  • When the problem started
  • Anything you’ve recently changed

Most early problems are easier to deal with before the colony has been tipped, transferred or moved into a setup that’s too large.
