Lasius niger Starter Set Care Guide
This is your guide from the day your queen arrives through founding, first workers, feeding, future housing, and winter rest.
Lasius niger, the black garden ant, is native to the UK and one of the easiest species to start with. She's hardy and forgiving, but founding still comes down to patience and stable, low-disturbance care rather than anything you actively do.
The one rule that matters most
Do not move a newly caught queen into a nest.
Right now, the test tube she arrived in is her nest. Once her first workers appear, you'll connect that tube to the Founding Pod's connector. The Founding Pod is a small feeding area with high walls — it doesn't replace the tube as the nest, and it isn't a nest itself.

Your queen arrives inside her tube with a water reservoir sealed behind cotton. Don't remove that cotton or rebuild the tube unless there's a genuine problem.
Day one
Once the parcel arrives:
- Open the outer packaging.
- Look at the queen through the tube — don't remove the entrance cotton.
- Don't tip or shake the tube.
- Put it somewhere stable, at normal indoor temperature.
- Leave her to settle.
Transport can leave a queen unusually still or restless. Give the tube time to reach room temperature before you start checking on her repeatedly.

Don't feed her yet
A Lasius niger queen is fully claustral. That means she seals herself into a founding chamber and raises her first workers — called nanitics — entirely from reserves stored in her own body, including the flight muscles she no longer needs. She doesn't need to leave the chamber to eat.
Feeding can help — queens that are fed small amounts of protein during founding tend to raise a slightly larger first batch of workers. But queens that go unfed still found colonies successfully, and opening the tube to feed her adds handling, disturbance, and a real risk of mould or an accident. For a first-time keeper, the safer default is to leave her sealed and unfed until workers appear. You can look at feeding options for future colonies once you've got more experience.
Setting her up
Where to keep her:
- Somewhere stable and level
- Out of direct sunlight
- Away from radiators and heat vents
- Away from speakers, washing machines, and anything that vibrates regularly
- Out of reach of children and pets
- Somewhere you won't feel tempted to move or check her daily
A drawer, quiet shelf, or cupboard works well, as long as it doesn't overheat and still gets normal airflow.
She doesn't need total darkness every second of the day, but keeping the nesting end covered cuts down on unnecessary disturbance. A little light during an occasional check isn't a problem.
Temperature:
Aim for a stable room temperature, roughly 20–24°C. Brood develops noticeably slower around 17–20°C and picks up pace in the 22–27°C range — but don't chase speed with extra heat. Founding queens exposed to heat stress show higher mortality and are less likely to produce workers at all. Stability matters far more than warmth.
Avoid:
- Sitting the tube directly on a heat mat
- Heating the water reservoir
- Leaving the tube in sunlight
- Any rapid temperature swing
- An unventilated, overly warm cabinet
Normal UK room temperature is enough. A slower colony isn't automatically an unhealthy one.
Checking her:
Once every 7–14 days is plenty during founding. A check means:
- Lift or slide back the cover.
- Look for the queen, eggs, larvae, or cocoons.
- Confirm water's still in the reservoir.
- Cover her again.
It doesn't mean rotating the tube, shining a bright light directly at her, or trying to count every egg. Checking more often won't speed anything up — it usually just adds stress.
What normal founding looks like
You might see:
- The queen staying still for long stretches
- Frequent grooming
- A small cluster of white eggs
- The queen carrying brood if she's been disturbed
- Eggs that seem to disappear and turn up again later
- Slower development in cooler weather
- A queen that's kept one or both wings
Wing removal is common after mating but isn't proof of fertility. Keeping her wings doesn't necessarily mean she's unmated either. There's no way to guarantee a caught queen will mate successfully, lay, and found a colony — that uncertainty is normal, not a sign you've done something wrong.
How the brood develops
Four visible stages: egg, larva, cocoon (pupa), adult worker.
Temperature has a big effect on speed — expect noticeably slower development at 17–20°C than at 22–27°C. Don't rely on a fixed timeline from anywhere online. One queen might produce workers quickly; another, kept in near-identical conditions, might take considerably longer.
First workers are usually smaller than later ones — this is normal. They're raised from finite reserves, and their job is simply to get the colony's foraging started.
When the first worker arrives
A newly emerged worker looks pale and soft at first. Give her about a day to darken and start moving normally before opening the colony up to the Founding Pod — don't rush to feed the moment you spot her.
Once one or more workers are active and moving normally, the colony's ready for a small feeding area.
Connecting the Founding Pod
The Founding Pod isn't a nest. It's a compact space with high walls where the first workers can:
- Take sugar water
- Take insect protein
- Dump waste
- Explore in a controlled way
The test tube stays the dark, humid nesting chamber throughout. Don't tip the queen and workers loose into the pod.
To attach it:
- Set the Founding Pod on a level surface.
- Have the test-tube connector ready.
- Hold the tube horizontally.
- Remove only the cotton stopper at the entrance end.
- Push the tube gently but firmly onto the connector.
- Check there are no gaps at the join.
- Keep the nesting end of the tube covered.
- Let them explore in their own time.
Never remove the cotton separating the queen from the water reservoir.
Workers may not enter the pod straight away — that's fine. They'll start exploring once they need food.
Don't connect to a nest yet. One or two workers isn't a reason to move into a formicarium. Doing so too early usually creates more space than the colony can manage, makes feeding and monitoring harder, gives waste more places to collect, and makes humidity harder to control. Stick with the test tube plus Founding Pod connector for now.
Feeding the first workers
Once workers are active, they need two things: carbohydrates for energy, and protein to support brood growth and the queen's egg production. Sugar solutions work well as the carbohydrate source; crickets, cockroaches, fruit flies, and mealworms all work as protein.
Sugar water:
Use the needle-tip bottle to place a very small droplet on the feeding tray.
Don't:
- Insert the needle into the test tube
- Feed right next to the brood
- Fill the tray with liquid
- Leave a droplet large enough to trap a worker
- Point the bottle at the ants while squeezing
A small colony takes very little at first. Start with one droplet and see how quickly it disappears. Refresh it once it's taken, dries out, or picks up debris — bigger droplets don't help; they just increase drowning and mess risk.
Protein:
Start with a very small piece of insect roughly once a week — a fruit fly, a small section of cricket, a bit of mealworm, or a piece of cockroach. For a colony with only a few workers, a whole feeder insect is far too much. Cut it open so the workers can get at the softer tissue inside.
Frozen-and-thawed feeders are worth using — it removes any risk of live prey fighting back in a confined space.
Put protein on the tray, not in the tube. Check the tray the next day and clear away anything uneaten before it spoils.
How often:
Start with a small sugar-water droplet every few days and one protein feeding a week, then adjust based on what's actually being taken. More larvae generally means more protein demand than a queen with eggs alone.
Ant jelly or protein jelly isn't a substitute for real insect protein — treat it as a supplement at most.
Cleaning the Founding Pod
Use the tray for food wherever you can — it lets you remove old food without disturbing the tube itself.
While cleaning:
- Work slowly, and don't knock the tube
- Don't leave the connection loose or unsecured
- Remove dead feeder remains and sticky residue
- Never spray cleaning products near the ants
- Plain water is fine on removable parts unless stated otherwise
No substrate needed in the pod — a clear floor makes spilled food, mould, waste, and the ants themselves much easier to see.
Looking after the test tube
Water: the reservoir behind the cotton is both drinking water and the colony's humidity source. Check periodically that water's still there, the cotton hasn't dried out completely, the tube hasn't flooded, the reservoir cotton hasn't collapsed, and condensation isn't excessive.
A bit of staining or ageing around the cotton isn't automatically an emergency — judge the whole picture: remaining water, smell, visible mould, flooding, and how the ants are behaving.
When to offer a fresh tube:
- The reservoir's nearly empty
- The cotton's dried out
- The tube's flooded
- Contamination is spreading
- You can no longer feed the colony safely
- Usable space has genuinely become cramped
Don't tip or shake the colony into a new tube. Offer a clean, darkened replacement and let them move on their own. If you're not sure, send a photo before attempting a forced move.
When does the colony need a nest?
Owning a nest doesn't mean it's ready for one. The optional Antastic Tom Small Nest with Founding Insert is a future upgrade — not something to attach to a freshly founded queen, and not something to use just because the first worker's arrived.
Keep using the test tube and Founding Pod as long as:
- Water's available
- The tube's safe and usable
- Workers can be fed through the pod without issue
- The colony isn't overcrowded
- Waste is manageable
Move to a nest once the tube's genuinely failing or the colony's grown enough to benefit from more space.
When that time comes:
- Hydrate the nest carefully with the supplied pipette..
- Don't saturate the nest.
- Connect the existing setup securely.
- Keep the new nest dark.
- Let the ants investigate on their own.
- Don't shake or pour them in.
The founding insert reduces the nest's usable space, but it isn't always the right setup for a lone queen.
Don't add a second queen
Don't introduce another Lasius niger queen to an existing colony. Queens sometimes found together cooperatively at first, but that arrangement doesn't last — once workers emerge, the queens fight, and only one survives, usually the one the workers feed preferentially. Combining queens later risks stress, injury, or death for one or both.
Winter rest (diapause)
Lasius niger is a temperate species and needs a genuine seasonal slowdown. As autumn approaches, expect:
- Reduced activity
- Less food being taken
- The queen slowing or stopping egg laying
- Slower brood development
- Larvae that sit without pupating
None of that means the colony's failing — it's the species following its normal yearly rhythm.
Research on overwintering Lasius niger found that colonies kept at a warmer end of the cool range (around 7–8°C) did better than colonies kept close to freezing (around 2°C), which measurably reduced worker survival. So for a UK-kept colony, aim for the warmer side of "cool" rather than treating near-freezing as ideal:
- Cool gradually through autumn
- Target roughly 5–10°C, ideally closer to 7–10°C rather than near 0°C
- Roughly November through late February or early March
- Warm back up gradually afterwards
Don't move a warm colony straight into near-fridge temperatures — give it time to acclimatise on the way down and the way back up.
During diapause:
- Make sure water's still available
- Keep the tube secure
- Check occasionally for water loss or flooding
- Don't warm the colony for long inspections
- Only offer food if workers are clearly still active and foraging
Even a young colony that's only just produced workers benefits from a proper winter rest — don't try to keep it growing straight through its first winter.
Common questions
My queen hasn't laid eggs. Is she infertile? Not necessarily. Transport, temperature, disturbance, and her individual condition all affect timing. Give her stable conditions and time — you can't confirm fertility from wing loss or appearance alone.
She keeps carrying or eating eggs. What do I do? Carrying eggs during a check is a normal disturbance response. Repeated brood loss can point to stress or condition, but one missing batch isn't enough to diagnose a problem. Check less, and leave her stable.
Should I feed her because she looks thin? Don't feed a lone queen just because of how she looks. She's fully claustral and built to raise her first workers without foraging. If her condition genuinely looks abnormal, send a photo for advice rather than guessing.
Can I attach the tube to the Founding Pod before workers arrive? No — keep her sealed during solo founding. Attach once the first workers have darkened and are moving normally.
Can I attach the tube directly to the small nest? Not during founding. Use the Founding Pod connector — the tube stays the nest, and the pod becomes the feeding area.
The workers aren't using the pod. Is something wrong? Not necessarily. A small colony often stays in the tube and only forages briefly. Put food on the tray and let them find it in their own time.
How fast should the colony grow? There's no fixed timetable — temperature, queen condition, brood stage, season, and food all affect it, and cooler conditions slow first-brood development considerably. Focus on stable care rather than comparing progress to someone else's colony online.
Should I heat them? Normal room temperature is enough for most UK homes. Gentle ambient warmth can help, but direct or uncontrolled heating isn't necessary and can be dangerous — never place the water reservoir over a heat source.
Can I release the colony later? Don't plan around this. Once ants have been kept with captive feeders and equipment, releasing them carries real ecological and disease risks. Only take on a queen if you're prepared to care for the colony long-term.
When to ask for help
Get in touch before making a major change if:
- The tube's flooding
- The water's run out
- The queen appears injured
- Brood keeps disappearing
- Mould is spreading quickly
- You're unsure about connecting a new tube
- You're considering a move into a nest
- The colony's behaving oddly after diapause
Include a clear photo of the full setup, a close photo of the queen and brood, the approximate room temperature, when the problem started, and anything you've recently changed.
Most early problems are far easier to fix before the colony's been tipped, transferred, or moved into a nest that's too big for it.
